A boy and a train
2005-11-06 - 12:04 p.m. Yesterday I was sitting with Linsey in the open air Mexican cafe downtown beside the train tracks, sipping a Sangria-laced Margarita and noshing on salsa-dipped chips. A train came by, blowing its whistle madly and loudly and making all the requisite clanking train noises. A baby, looked to be about 6 or 7 months old, was in a high chair at the next table, and he was absolutely freaked by the train. It really was loud, and it probably was his first experience with a train. It was so funny to watch. At first he was so scared because it was so loud, then his mama talked to him over the noise (you couldn't hear what she was saying, but it was obviously something reassuring), and you could see this look of awe and wonderment drift over his face, totally replacing his fear, and then he started to smile. He gazed in rapture at the train the entire time it was passing. It made me smile to see a little boy fall in love with his first train on a sunny fall afternoon.
